How to Sign Your Ohio Car Title
Published on 8/13/2026
Ohio requires the seller's signature to be notarised, and the form includes a note to the notary warning that all blank spaces must be completed before acknowledgement.
It is a thirty-second job that people get wrong every day, and the fix is never quick — a duplicate title, a wait, and a buyer who has lost patience. Here's how to do it once.
The highlighted bar is where your signature goes. The arrow points to it. Nothing else on the page needs your handwriting unless the form asks for it by name.
Where to sign on your Ohio title
Upper-right of the page, in the block headed Assignment of Ownership. The highlighted bar covers the Seller's Signature line, marked with an X, beside the seller's printed name field.
This is a notary state. Do not sign the title until you are standing in front of a notary public. A notary is certifying that they watched you sign — they cannot lawfully stamp a signature that was already on the page when you walked in. Bring the unsigned title and photo ID. Banks, credit unions, shipping stores and many law offices offer notary services, often for a few dollars or free to customers.
Three rules that keep a title valid
- Copy the name off the face of the title. Don't sign from memory. Look at the registered owner line, then reproduce it — same spelling, same initials, same order.
- Nothing goes outside the highlight. The form is a legal instrument with one row assigned to you. Filling in a neighbouring field, even correctly, creates a discrepancy someone has to explain later.
- Doubt beats damage. If any part of the form is unclear, pause and call {{TRACKWALA_PHONE}}. We look at these documents all day.
Fill in every blank before the notary stamps it
Ohio prints a note to notaries directly under the signature area: all blank spaces, including the buyer's name and address, must be completed before acknowledgement. A notary who follows that instruction will refuse a half-finished title, and they're right to. Have the buyer's details, the odometer reading and the purchase price ready before you go, or you'll be making the trip twice.
What voids an Ohio title
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles rejects titles for the same handful of reasons, year in and year out:
- Any erasure or correction, chemical or mechanical.
- Overwriting a character to fix a slip of the pen.
- Using a reassignment row meant for a licensed dealer.
- Completing the purchaser's section on their behalf.
- Signing in pencil, red ink, or anything that isn't standard blue or black.
None of these are recoverable with a pen. Every one of them means a duplicate title application.
Before you send your title to TRACKWALA
Run through this list before the document goes in an envelope:
- Printed name and signature agree with the certificate.
- Mileage recorded without tenths.
- Date of sale filled in correctly.
- Every other field left exactly as you found it.
- A photo of the front and back saved to your phone.
That last point is the one people skip and later wish they hadn't. A photo of the completed assignment is the only proof you have of what you handed over and when.
Ohio title questions we get asked
Ohio warns about tax audits on the price. Should I understate the sale price?
No. The form states that transfers are audited by the Department of Taxation and the buyer may be assessed any additional tax found due. Report the real figure.
What happens if I make a mistake?
Stop immediately. Don't cross it out, don't cover it. Send us a photo of the document as it stands and we'll tell you whether it's recoverable or whether you need a duplicate.
Does the buyer sign at the same time?
Usually yes, but the seller's section has to be complete first. Several states print that instruction directly on the form.
