How to Sign Your Maine Car Title

Maine puts the odometer disclosure statement above the signature line and the lienholder block below it, so the seller's row is sandwiched in the middle of the first assignment.

The whole thing takes half a minute when you know where to look. When you don't, it costs you a duplicate title and a fortnight. Here's the short version.

Where to sign on your Maine title

Three rules that keep a title valid

Use the name printed on the certificate. The signature has to match the registered owner exactly, character for character. If the title carries a suffix or a middle initial, include it.
Keep every other line blank. The buyer's fields, the dealer reassignment rows and the lienholder section are not yours to complete, even as a favour. A seller's handwriting in a buyer's box is treated as tampering.

Complete the block before the buyer signs anything

Maine prints an instruction to buyers in the middle of the form: do not sign below until all sections above have been completed and signed. That means the sequence matters. Odometer reading, mileage checkboxes, your signature, your printed name, your address — all of it goes in before the buyer touches the page. A buyer who signs a half-finished assignment has certified to something that wasn't there.

What voids a Maine title

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles rejects titles for the same handful of reasons, year in and year out:

Correction fluid, correction tape, or an eraser.
A crossed-out word, even where the correction is obviously right.
A signature in the wrong assignment block, which invalidates everything below it.
Filling in buyer fields as a courtesy. Leave them empty.
Non-standard ink. Blue or black only.

None of these are recoverable with a pen. Every one of them means a duplicate title application.

Before you send your title to TRACKWALA

Sale date is accurate, not backdated.
No stray marks anywhere else on the document.
Both sides photographed before the title leaves your hands.

Does the buyer sign at the same time?

Usually yes, but the seller's section has to be complete first. Several states print that instruction directly on the form.
